Until the fire ball did not go out, the girl hastily collected the medicines and ammunition scattered through the basement, but unraveled to pick up oxygen cylinders remaining on corpses. Hello, you ever heard about g string? I would tell myself, but this has long been done for me for a long time. If you are not familiar with this monumental creation of human thought, you can read a note about it on Stopgame. If you do not have much desire, then I will retell the story of g string briefly.
In the yard 2006. A resident of Japan of Korean origin, hiding under the nickname of Eyaura (initially, however, the nickname was Myohyo) unexpectedly discovers the notorious Garry’s Mod. Soon, she also suddenly discovers the editor of the Hammer cards and is taken to rivet the locations for Garry’s Mod in the spirit of futuristic anti -utopia. After another year, these cards accumulate so much that scattered pieces of Puzzle begin to gather in a certain picture against the will of their creator by themselves. The events of the next four years are shrouded in a secret year and even the author itself does not particularly talk about this period. Although, perhaps, there was nothing to tell there? In any case, work on the connection of cards in the mod went on all the next four years and the result justified all the works.
On the morning of December 24, 2011, on the Moddb website, without an announcement of the release, a full -fledged mod suddenly appears, which does not even require Half Life 2 for launching: there was enough free Source SDK 2006 and Steam account. The first few days the game did not notice the game, but a month later the cult of fans began to form around it.
"G String Beta". In the yard 2011. Even many AAA projects of that time could not boast of such an artistic and geometric style, what can we say about the modification.
An unusual design, a cool and gloomy atmosphere, in the end, the true efforts of the only female author bribed the hearts of many those who were able to overcome the general curvature of the modification and go through it to the end (among them was me). Albeit limited, but still success, turned out to be so unexpected for Eyuura, which instead of leaving the field of Igrodelia once and for all, she set about bringing the modification to mind. In 2013, an updated version of the first models of mod -“G String -Day One” -was laid out for a small group of testers -and the original project received the suffix “Beta”.
After positive reviews on “Day One”, they took up the game seriously, and in the next seven years he polished, improved and finished in every possible way.
On the morning of October 16, 2020, without announcement of the release, two months ahead of schedule, Steam suddenly comes out "G String".

Here I could rush into the listing of advantages and disadvantages of the game … but I don’t want. And I do not consider it necessary. Almost everything that could be said about the new version of “G String” already managed to say then, in the distant 2011 about the original, and the above can be voiced without me more language reviewers, to which the version of 2020 will be in a novelty.
The only thing that is new can be said about “g string” can be said only by comparing the old and new versions, but not considering them separately. Once a long time ago, a school teacher of psychology said that if you take and mirror the right and left sides of the person’s face, then two completely different people will turn out: on one of the parties there is an imprint from all evil, which a person did, and on the other-an imprint from all good deeds of a person. But in the end, the mirror is put back in the nightstand and two faces merge in one.

Of course, this is most likely a stupid fairy tale from the field of fortune -telling along the coffee grounds, but this fairy tale as nothing else describes the situation with the old and new version of “g string”: the old face is new and the face is good and the face is evil. One and the same face. However, each person had a childhood, and it leaves its mark on the whole subsequent life. At “G String” this childhood can be called “Half-Life 2”-after all, it was on the Source engine that both versions were created.
Therefore, in the future, I will draw parallels between these two and a half games. If you came here for any review, then you should probably save your time and go read something else, because then my charming personal reasoning and notes on the topic will be mainly: the preparation is the case, you understand yourself.
Cartography
What can be the types of cards in games? They are usually divided into two subtypes: linear and open. In games with the open world, the cards are mostly free for research from the very beginning. And even if most of the territory is originally closed for research, then when it is opened, previous locations do not become inaccessible. A similar approach exists, for example, in subway, where one of the main pillars of the gameplay becomes the opportunity to travel freely around the world, using newly acquired abilities to discover new locations. The open world is also welcome in the RPG genre, even if it is essentially empty and exists only for a waste of the player time to move from point A to point B.
The second subtype is linear. The name speaks for itself: there is the beginning of the location and its end. The road from here is only one. Many platformers and action games use this approach, since it allows you to organize a continuous attraction for the player, in which he will not have the slightest chance to miss the entertainment item, whether it is an exploding barrel or a powerful sniper rifle.
This is all, of course, very beautiful, but where can I go now?
However, even within some genres, experiments with cards are quite possible: if in “Call of Duty” the cards are a gut with a couple of branches, then in more respectable representatives, “unreal” or “quake” levels, even if they demand to go from point A to point B, still give enough free space to get lost in them or vice versa: by chance, an arrowslip through the whole card, not seeing even one fifth of its contents.
Remembering “Half Life 2” you can recall which cards there were large, but at the same time not confusing. The path from A to B was more or less clear and understandable. “Valve” tried well, licking the cards to perfection and given the problems of even the most incomprehensible players. Various inconsistencies between the logic of geometry and the logic of the gameplay were hidden by various futuristic elements: moving walls, devouring the earth under them, toxic hordes of leeches in sea water, alliance checks and energy fields, very conveniently passing through themselves only enemy fighters. Above all this was smoothed out by the work of artists and designers, leaving behind a perfectly polished product pleasant to the eye and to the brain.
The main thing is not to recall the game again, otherwise the illusion collapses and the big and open world turns into a very large room, on the ceiling and walls of which the endless fields under the blue sky are painted with oil paints with oil paints. The problem is this: this world is so organically felt precisely because it was artificially processed. The hand of a person is felt even where it should not be logic. If, during the investigation, for example, the murder, there are too many compromising evidence on the suspect, then it is quite natural if the investigators begin to creep out the suspicion that the person was substituted: everything is too successful!
That is why the weakest places in video games trying to show the real world are considered to be natural landscapes. Because it is there that nothing should take shape. But this directly contradicts the logic of creating cards, which claims that they can be passed. Nature is not anthropocentric, unlike factories/offices/warehouses, which are planned in advance with the calculation that it will be possible to go from one place to another without exposing their lives of danger (Hello, “F.E.A.R "!).
Some scenes in dynamics look so good that sometimes you do not believe that this is still an old Source Engine, which has passed the most minimal processing in the hands of a lonely developer.
What approach does G String choose?
Yes, no, in fact. And this is his uniqueness.
In primitivism, there is such a thing as “Naive Art” (naive art) – it denotes the works of artists who did not have a professional education related to art. In a word, these are artists lovers. Yes, of course, some of their work are similar to children’s spread, but sometimes the original ideas, interesting compositions and non -standard approaches to creative activity begin to look at the inaccurate layers of paint. Yes, these are not very good works from the point of view of an academic assessment, but they, firstly, are unique, and secondly, sincere. This is exactly the moment when the phrase – “I am an artist, I see so” – has a basis.
In the case of G String, it is this card that is played out.

"G String Beta" begins non -standard – in a two -story apartment with many rooms. To leave it, you need to find the key. The key is on the cornice under one of the windows. However, this first “failure” of the author of the game, as a game designer served me as a valuable lesson: I never expected at least some brightly glowing marker or hint throughout the game, and received a wild pleasure, poking at all angles in a row. Primitive and inconvenient? Yes, indeed, but there is never a feeling that you are driven by the handle, and that this angle will be another performance, where actors in the clown makeup have been waiting for you for a long time. Such unsocused corners contribute to the perception of internal objects as something that appeared naturally, and not in the course of intense work "from above".
All this location is available for study. You can rush along the ruins of the skyscraper for the next location, or you can lose about fifteen minutes, looking for the way to valuable ammunition.
The accompaniment of the intuitive search for the path is also gigantic … No, sorry – Huge locations. I opened the Hammer editor and studied for a long time what the nameless Japanese was created in several years of continuous work. It often happened that the cards in height and width were selected to those limits, further than which the engine could no longer withstand and gave the departure after departure.
One of the cards was a large abandoned quarter of the destroyed city. All rooms and nooks that were not overwhelmed with stones and garbage were completely open to study and research, even if they were empty. Drinks of enemy soldiers wandered through the streets, but they could be safely circumvented if desired. If it were “Half-Life 2”, then the level would be neatly forced by obstacles so that the opportunity to go through the level disappeared through, but every five steps would have to stumble on the squads of flipped bots, and in each remaining affordable nozzles would be piled on cartridges and first-aid kits: in vain, or something, the player loses his time, in the end, in the end, in the end, in the end, in the end, in the end?
Or another case – a river with deadly water, on the surface of which a flimsy raft is swinging. I jump on him and he begins to roll to the left and right, hinting that he can and should be pushed if you want to move somewhere, and not stand still. Five minutes later, I hit the map, driving the raft not to the other shore, but against the current. But the feeling that I am doing something wrong!
Crossing a raft through a wide channel is one of the most memorable scenes in “G String Beta”.
Once I made my way through the dirty lane somewhere in the lower city, as I noticed the pipe sticking out of the walls. Yes, they stuck so seductively that I decided to climb on them. And then climb into neighboring pipes higher. And yet, and even higher. Until finally I was on some roof. Surprised, what a non -standard approach was offered to me in the passage of the level and … buried in an invisible wall. A little bewildered, I began to study the roof and saw that there were no textures in some places, in some places there were no conflicts. It was I realized that I spent about fifteen minutes, stupidly getting out of the map boundaries. And again – it seemed to me that I was doing everything right! You are confused, but the feeling that you made a mistake for some reason do not arise. What is it, if not a great design design?
The “G String” of 2020 did not decrease gigantomania, but there was less direct freedom. Unfortunately, the maps have become more linear. No, this does not mean at all that in the new revision there are fewer forks and non -standard tasks – their number has not changed and many fragments from Beta crossed without special changes, or even vice versa – becoming even more confusing and more branching. The linearity lies in the fact that now all the forces are smoothly smeared throughout the game, instead of throwing them all on one card in a skew and disorder.
Here you can jump down without breaking. Even if at first glance I can’t believe it, there really is a whole bunch of valuable supplies below and the path back.
However, there are pleasant innovations: almost every chapter can now be passed in two different ways. If one of the paths is open immediately, then the second path must be carefully sought. At the same time, each road leads to a new location that will not be available if you choose another fork. Thus, the reigree and total duration of the game increases, and one passage will not be in everything like another. The main thing is not to forget to persist if you feel that you can stumble upon the following location: the road back, unlike Half-Life 2, will always be guaranteed to block.
Sometimes you can contrive and avoid a fight with opponents, finding somewhere ventilation or hole on the roof that will allow enemies to go around the enemies. Not like Sam Fisher, of course, but the very opportunity is already pleasing. In addition, at each and levels there are special caches with powerful and rare types of weapons, for which you need to be very strongly harassed: they are really very well hidden. And if the caches, on the contrary, is like a lingerie in the eye, then this means that when it is opened by your soul, a punitive detachment will most likely advance – no one was just going to give the valuable equipment in fact.
With a shield, or without a shield
The first clash with a humanoid opponent in “G String” will touch the old corn in the cerebellum among experienced fans of the shooters. The first few minutes, the connection of these two events will be unclear, but soon the insight occurs: “Yes, these are repainted combines!". A set of weapons also evokes longing: a hammer, a gun, a shotgun, a rocket launcher, and so on – just also a repainted weapon from Half Life 2. When it comes to the paranormal abilities of the main character, it turns out that telekinesis is the usual gravitsepa, and pyrokinesis is that at any moment you can “sprinkle” one or more fire balls in front of you, which will immediately flush out of the ground, like a regular physical object. Not very and cool.
“G String” is well aware of this, and by all means tries to hide the problem: the secondary of the gameplay, brazenly licked with “Half Life 2”, is more than compensated by the originality of the approach to key conventions of the game. The “G String Beta” was surprised to find the absence of any armor: the life of the protagonist hung on a single strip of health. This made it possible to make battles more interesting and more difficult, because without additional protection the maximum strength was many times less, and in separate clashes even blind and flimsy boobs could prevail, crushing the player in number. If necessary, you can slow down the time: there is no full-fledged "bullet-time", but quickly navigate in space or throw back the abandoned grenade.
In the 2020 version, the slowdown in time was cut out, and the armor was returned. However, the blanks twisted accuracy, damage and reaction rate. Because of this, the game turns into a competition for the title of the fastest arm in the West: who fired first, he won. On the one hand, realism, and on the other, the F6/F9 keys are used almost more often than the left mouse button, and each fight won causes a hot desire to press ESC and go out onto the balcony, and smoke a cigarette or two into the cold night air, thinking about the flush of being.
At such moments, it becomes a shame that from the new version they cut out a slowdown in time.
If G String Beta evenly awarded the player with the necessary resources as it moves to the final credits, without moving away from his ancestor in this process, then the “g string” model changes: if for a pistol and a gun of cartridges is issued on a mountain in each hairpin, and even a change of complexity to a higher cardinal change, then more powerful weapons-even more powerful weapons-be a more powerful weaponshotgun or revolver – now turned into rare specimens, for which you need to find local secret. Due to increased complexity, valuable ammunition has to be saved in case the game throws you into the closed arena against the hordes of enemies. Over time, the arsenal of the heroine will be significantly replenished and life will become easier, but the first half of the game can be excessive squandering to the fact that you will be left without cartridges at all.
Need forces the use of the fireballs of the main character: they themselves are absolutely harmless and suitable only for inciting pre-arranged oil spots. However, if you give them acceleration with the help of telekinesis, then they turn into a powerful weapon of close combat. Bright flashes of fire prevent them from throwing them in maneuverable opponents, and therefore it is best to use them against slow robots.
Nothing is encrypted in the QR code: it only shows the places of caches.
In the frequent moments of the lull, when no one chases the player and no one shoots at him, it is early to relax: the environment itself is still acting against you. Remember the most terrible platform episodes in first -person games and get ready to survive them all again. What in Bete, that in the new version you every ten minutes make you present yourself to the Italian plumber and jump from a pole to the abyss of varying degrees of mortality. So that there is no desire to throw the keyboard out the window, the real dimensions of the player are slightly larger than those that are determined visually. Because of this, you can safely run along thin wiring, but you can not immediately climb into huge holes in the floor.
In addition to acrobatic skills, it is also necessary to demonstrate observation skills: behind turns, minins-traps or unsuccessfully placed explosive barrels are often hidden. Unlike their compradors from Half Life 2, in the new G String, they have a bad habit even to explode even with an unsuccessful touch. If this turned out to be not enough, then the player will try to finish the jets of toxic gas and the pillars of water flowing from the pipes. What kind of water from the pipes is poisonous and instantly eats all health and armor, but which is not – I never figured out. As a result, I panic dodging both that and the other.
One or two seconds in this water-and you are a corpse. Thank you for at least stained it in a malachite color.
However, it was not without messages: now, for the first time in the water, you hear the most beautiful thing in the world: the suit will tell you a crooked English that you have for three hours left for three hours. If the “G String Beta” has practically absent water episodes, then in the new version you will regularly have to dive under water. Due to the absence of rapidly accelerating air, potentially annoying episodes turned into discharging: there are no opponents or traps in the water, and even internal music sounds muffled. All other elements of the costume received the same “upgrade”: if you need to take a run, then the sprint button works without a break for “recharging”. The built -in flashlight is always shining. After “Half Life 2”, where you either ran or shone, such a concession is a little sweeten the bitter pill of dysbalance.
Desaration
In the first version of G String, the first thing you notice is two black stripes above and below the screen, which in addition were framed by a rather noticeable vignet. Above all this was sprinkled with the effect of "grain". If you do not know the console commands to turn off these effects, then the whole game could be passed with them. However, not everyone was able to get used to such a “movie”, and threw the author of complaints with the wagon and a small cart. The artist listened to the exclamations of people, but did not completely abandon her ideas, and even vice versa – increased the scale of transformations. Now in the main menu, along with the classic settings menu, a dick of “special effects” is proudly hanging.
At the first turned on, the eyes begin to scatter, but in the end you inevitably find comfortable play settings.
Since they are all disconnected by default, the picture looks much brighter and more saturated than a faded and gloomy original. If someone does not like it, but he can at any time make a picture at least black and white, at least green-red. Even the ill -fated stripes were left from above and below. I especially liked the opportunity to turn on the optical distortion of the picture: in closed rooms it works perfectly, creating the effect of amateur shooting in the spirit of Kane & Lynch 2. In general, options for every taste immediately from the box where they usually need to be dug up using special programs.
Even HUD and the opportunity to see the body of the heroine is separately tuned, if you direct the camera to the ground. There is no magnificent bust, ala- "Tresspasser", but it affects the immersion in the immersion.
A trifle, but nice.
Moving with Source 2006 to Source 2013 is noticeable immediately. Lighting, HDR, dynamic shadows from a flashlight and third -party lighting sources. High details of the environment are striking: on each wall, in each clock there is something interesting. If the game was a VR mode, then it could have been spent days behind it, just looking at the world around you. On advertising posters, they offer to insert a chip with a 12-year-old child into your cat, machines for the sale of worn linen guarantee that their goods were worn for at least a year, and manufacturers of sex robots proudly declare that their product does not know the word “no”. By the way, sometimes they are found as ordinary opponents: they are distinguished from ordinary robots that by noticing you, they begin to invitingly pump with hips and elaborate them, calling for themselves. When such a creature with torn legs emerges from the darkness, erotically wheezing, you involuntarily tremble and strive to run away without even entering the battle.
Through the binoculars set in a costume, it is not only convenient to kiss far -standing enemies, but also meditatively examine local landscapes. Something interesting happens on the horizon: neon signs flicker, advertising airships slowly swim, the pipes of factories belp the flame mixed with the poisonous smog. One of the chapters generally begins with a five -minute trip on the train, and looking at the landscape outside the window.
In the second half of the game, when the slums will already have time for you to get bored, the game will sharply raise us up, into the near -cosmic space. Yellow golden picture will be replaced by a bewitching cold, blue background. As a reward, they allow to fly and shoot on a space fighter. The complexity of the game here decreases specifically so that the beauty of local species does not overshadow the constant need to load the nearest sve. Do not shoot, not haste, only calm contemplation. Your screenshots folder will definitely swell like a family album after a trip to Egypt.
The console team “NoClip” is also well suited for this game as cheese for guilt or wobble for beer: there is something to look around and search for so much here.
Even the most seedy noblecake is not felt by such because of the great zeal, which was invested by the creator of the game in every meter of playing space.
But there is no need to be deceived that the visual advantages of the game are limited only to the whims for the eyes and the punishment for the video card. All graphic bells and whistles are only seasoning for the main dish: a dense and gloomy atmosphere. Although “gloomy” is an incorrect definition, even the opposite in meaning that is really in fashion.
In Freud’s psychology, in his later years, two, as it seemed to him then, the main motive of human consciousness: “Eros” and “Tanatos”. The first – Eros – consisted in the pursuit of life, for creativity, to the process of creation, and was responsible for the libido of the individual. Tanatos, on the contrary, manifested itself in the desire for death, for its readiness to accept it, and was associated with old age, when many great goals have already been achieved in youth and a person has nothing more to wish for. At the same time, to the age of the physical and Eros and Tanatos were not knined: a young girl who, by logic, should live and rejoice, cuts her wrist with trifles;And the ancient old man, who is already standing with one foot in the grave, still cheerfully runs in the morning and with pleasure draws paintings on the veranda after a dense dinner.
In Half Life 2, despite the spirit of anti -utopia and universal decay, the spirit of Eros was more manifested: there is an inseparable couple that is found throughout the game, and the resistance movement actively creating new means of combating aliens. The absence of children and even adolescents does not at all mean that this world is clearly doomed – especially after turning off the suppression field, which is joyfully notified by Dr. Kleiner in the first episode. Even a quasi-loud line in the person of a couple Alix-Gordon did not forget.
The alliance is the opposite – the power of Tanatos. They are not only responsible for the extinction of earthlings unnecessary to them, but also took the most active part in the death of the biosphere of the planet. Aliens in this paradigm destroy all living things on Earth, arranging a kind of delayed apocalypse. The conflict of Eros and Tanatos in its most obvious form also flares up between the young civilization of earthlings against a more ancient and advanced aliens. The young Gordon, who has not grown in Stasis for a day, against the old and gray -haired administrator Brin, who broadcasts his murder in the mentor tone of the mentoring propaganda. This is a classic structure of conflict of conditional goodness and evil.
In "G String" in both versions of this struggle there is. There is no eros. Only Tanatos. Yes, according to the plot of the game, mankind has long conquered the solar system and even set to terramorphism of the planets, but this was a forced measure due to the death of the Earth. The planet in the world "G String" has long been beyond the facet of salvation, because it has almost nothing alive left in it. The reproductive instinct is actively suppressed by the government from literally humanistic considerations: the pollution of the planet has led to a decrease in spaces suitable for the existence of spaces, and if there is no thorough medical control behind the development of the fetus, then children are born with a distorted genetic code.
Even despite the fact that all these girls are harmless cardboard clippings, I still don’t want to turn their backs to them. What if?
The decline is not only material, but also spiritual: many religions have long been banned, but drugs and alcohol are universal. Many transfer consciousness to virtual worlds to escape from the horrors of reality, or hit hedonism, surrounding themselves with lustful sex bots and electronic toys of all varieties and sizes. The few remaining states were transformed into militarized autocracies, which are not considered to be human losses either with their own or a foreign side. In the theme of post-apocalypse, the theme of the condoms of the old world or its revival from the ashes in one form or another is inevitably addressed. In "G String" at the moment that the main character manages to find, this station has long been passed. There is nothing to save, and there is no need to escape to another planet, or to the next world by euthanasia.
-(. ) How did you come up with the backstory g string?(. ) You managed to create a world in which you really do not want to live!
– I just took the current trends and extrapolated them: that if the climate continues to deteriorate, the lady cities will go under water, and our oil will end? What if we continue to pollute the planet? That if there are even more people and the alienation of capital will occur? However, it has already happened: now the money is no more than a piece of paper. In every corner there are surveillance cameras, and the gap between the rich and the poor grows every minute. What will this lead us to? (. ) There really is no longer a way out: humanity does not believe in the spiritual, but believes in digital. We bet on high technologies, risking in the end to lose everything.

If you describe briefly, then the local world is simply dysfunctional. It has no hope for a positive outcome, or even just for the status. From the very first minutes it becomes clear that what is happening to anyone on the monitor will end. All our actions are just an attempt to survive. That the resistance movement, that myo, that the special divisions of the government are nothing more than maggot swarming in the corpse of a dead dog. Does the decaying corpse have a happy future, or the future in general?
Epilogue
While I was enjoying the view of the scattering limbs after a well -abandoned grenade, involuntarily thought about how much effort was invested in the game. Completely created models and textures from scratch, many new sounds and completely their own music (Eyarua is also responsible for almost the entire soundtrack of the new G String). 12 years is a good term. Even if you take the starting point not 2007-2008 for the starting point, when the first part began to be created, but the period from 2011 to 2013, it still turns out that the project was spent from 9 to 7 years. The epic novel “War and Peace” took six years from Tolstoy. David Lynch’s "Head-Lastik" starred for five years. Peter Jackson’s “Space Street – four years. “Cave Story” and “Stardew Valley” were developed for four years. "Undertale" – three years.
And here – at least seven years. Moreover, without any guarantees of success or glory. It is hard to imagine what a blow is primarily on a person’s psyche. And the worst thing is that there is no way back and cannot be. Long before getting acquainted with Source Engine, the author tried to realize his ideas in music and cinema, but to no avail. Only in the field of game development did she manage to express herself. Before us is the result of not only creative work, but also the therapy of a person who put too much.
